The CW continues to add new scripted acquisitions with Family Law, an Australian drama featuring Jewel Staite, Victor Garber, Zach Smadu and Genelle Williams from Canada.
Abigail begins her probation period at the firm and immediately exceeds her low-level position by helping a mother find her sperm donor on Craigslist and sue for 13 years of back child support owed from him.
Jewel Staite
Jewel Staite has appeared in a range of movies such as Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls and Firefly; she currently stars in Family Law as Abigail Bianchi – an alcoholic recovering from alcoholism who must navigate both her family’s issues as well as those of her clients’ problems. Victor Garber plays Harry Svensson (Abigail’s father and boss); Zach Smadu plays Daniel (Harry’s son); while Dixie Carter serves as “pit bull” divorce lawyer Dixie Carter plays Dixie Carter (“pit bull” divorce lawyer).
After her husband kicks her out, Abigail goes on a binge that ends with her appearing drunk at court. Suspended and fined, she can only practice law again if she can find a senior attorney willing to mentor her for one year; only Harry Svensson from the top family law firm agrees. Abigail represents Karolinka a Slavic mail-order bride whom Abigail attempts to assist avoid deportation.
Victor Garber
Victor Garber, best-known for his roles in Titanic and Argo, is an esteemed actor in film and television. He has appeared on various series such as Legends of Tomorrow from CW and Deception from NBC; as well as appearing in several other films.
Family Law is an entertaining Australian series which follows the chaotic journey of the Law family. Starring Kathleen Quinlin, Christopher MacDonald and Dixie Carter who all serve as attorneys at a family law firm.
Abigail Bianchi, an expert at deflecting responsibility from herself to others, experiences a major rupture in her marriage and is banned from practicing law for one year. After finding senior lawyer Harry Svensson willing to mentor her during this probationary period, Abigail’s firm takes on an adoption case from a young couple seeking to reverse it and seeks the reasons behind their mother’s unpredictable behavior while Joanne and Daniel’s relationship is at a crossroads.
Zach Smadu
Zach Smadu is an accomplished Canadian actor who has appeared on countless television shows. He starred as a regular character on Cardinal and Kim’s Convenience for five seasons each, and also made appearances in the Hallmark holiday comedies Angel Falls and Two Turtle Doves. Zach has an array of acting skills spanning musical theatre as well as dance that have allowed him to build an impressive portfolio of work experience.
Recently, he appeared on Family Law as Daniel Svensson, Abigail’s father and boss. A womanizer with an uncertain relationship to his daughter, Daniel has found himself exploring his sexuality through this role, causing discord within the family unit.
Family Law was an entertaining legal drama that also touched on some engrossing policy issues. While its run was short-lived, some great actors such as Christopher MacDonald and Dixie Carter graced its cast. Genelle Williams
Genelle Williams made her name as Kim Carlisle on Nickelodeon’s Radio Free Roscoe series, before going on to star in TV shows such as The Latest Buzz and Warehouse 13. Additionally, she made appearances in two made-for-TV movies; It’s A Boy Girl Thing and Beautiful People.
The Family Law follows the lives of a Chinese Australian family led by mom Jenny and dad Danny as they raise Ben, Candy, Andrew, Tammy and Michelle – as well as serious issues surrounding their marital problems. Although considered comedic in nature, The Family Law presents many serious topics.
Kathleen Quinlin plays Lynn Holt, Christopher MacDonald portrays Rex Weller and Dixie Carter plays Randi King – three attorneys from three distinct generations of law firms who work together.
